11. Shakti - Bed of Nails

Bed of Nails

A year or so ago, I became fascinated with these shakti mats and brought one from my local gym. These acupressure mats are self-care tools based on the Indian Bed of Nails that have been used traditionally for thousands of years. Then as a coincidence there was a clip on TV about these 2 amazing young men George Lill and John Heslop (click the link to read their story) who were behind the product with a simple aim to build a better world. Here is the link to their Shakti website where you can read about their bid to become socially responsible manufacturers.

The first time I used it I was super sensitive. I could only lie on it with a singlet on for a couple of minutes. Over the 19 days of the challenge I built up to being able to lie on my back on the mat with bare skin for 20 minutes. If you’re going to try this it is wise just to follow the instructions for use on the Shakti website. I loved using the mat on my feet, but to start I definitely had to have socks on!

Since the challenge has finished I don’t do it everyday but if I notice tension in my body I bring my ‘shakti’ out and for me it works to ease the pressure. It’s something you need to try for yourself. Start small, build up and let me know what you think!
