19. Put your CAP on

For the ‘Live Up To You’ 2020 project we post one little wellbeing idea/suggestion/technique that you and your friends are welcome to self-experiment with in your life and see how it works for you. How do we stay present and truly listen to what someone is else is saying?

Put your CAP on?

How do we stay present and truly listen to what someone is else is saying?

Put your CAP (acronym for) be:

- Curious

- Attentive

- Present

It sounds so simple and easy, but in reality it is really hard. Common barriers to listening include: preoccupation with our own thoughts and agendas; judging; distractions; prejudice or bias; sympathising rather than emphasizing, and listening to reply not to understand (Stephen Covey quote).

We all want to be listened to and heard. So put your CAP on next time you really want to understand someone better. Be Curious, Attentive and Present.

Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply
