16. Create Space
Where do you work when you are at home?
I had slipped into the habit of working at the kitchen table. Sitting at the table working on my laptop, it felt like I was in the hub of the house as it caught the first rays of the morning sunlight and was the central place where everyone gathered. The trouble was, I felt that I needed to work all the time as the cue for me to work was the kitchen table. There was no separation between home and work. I wanted to feel that the kitchen and living area was family space not work space.
We had a room by the garage that was filled with bikes and junk so here was an opportunity to set up a little office and see how that would go. I had reservations because I didn’t want to feel like the ‘loner’ in the room far away on my own missing out on family time. So I made it a ‘Live Up to You, 19 for 19) challenge. I’d give it 19 days in the new work space, see how it went and if I hated it I’d go back to the kitchen table.
Sometimes, when you have an idea the world aligns itself to it. A friend just happening to move and gifted us a desk that he didn’t want in his new house. Then Paul’s parents had a cane chair that they didn’t want anymore and before I knew it, I had the foundation furniture to set up an office without it costing a cent!
19 days came and went and I love this new space. I feel like the living area of our home is for ‘home’ and I am so lucky to have an amazing space to work and create. Do you have somewhere in your environment that you can change to create a little space?
