TEAM

I love being part of a team. I always have. I love the energy that you generate when working on a collective goal. Many of my ‘live up to you’ challenges are shaped around what is happening in my life at the time. Over the last 19 days my life was filled with team focused activities which included a group project, basketball tournaments and a family holiday. It made sense that this challenge would be dedicated to being part of a team.

How did I do this? What’s different?

I played the full immersion game. Instead of thinking constantly about the next thing I had to do, I let myself just sit and be in the moment with the people that I was with. I let go of all the things that I was working on such as this website, my school work and just played full out.

I am part of a team of teachers who are working on a project in our schools looking at student voice, agency, engagement and wellbeing. We had a big presentation that we needed to prepare and present together which meant there had to be lots of cooperation as there were quite a few moving parts. When I was with my project team I was fully present. We managed to present our work to the biggest audience we have had to date. Once it was done we had each other to share the relief and feeling of success of doing something that was really challenging.

When the boys had their basketball tournament we lived and breathed basketball for three days. I didn’t worry if I didn’t quite get all the little daily tasks done perfectly like tidying and keeping up with the washing (usually stresses me out). I just let it go and knew I’d get to it and it would get done and that was o.k. In the end everything did get sorted because we worked as a TEAM!

The day after the tournament we flew to Auckland leaving home at 5 am for a family trip to the top of the North Island and a few days with my brother and his family. What an amazing family trip we had. Full immersion again, just everyone in the moment enjoying each other’s company! I didn’t open my laptop once and I didn’t feel guilty!!! I disconnected from work and my own internal pressures and goals and reconnected!!! There is something so special about being with a group of people and feeling connected and part of something bigger than yourself. So what’s the take away? Relationships matter so when we’re in them BE in them because we are a TEAM ‘Together Everyone Achieves More’.
